Food writer Margaret Hickey will be giving a reading and answering food-related questions in Charlie Byrne's at 6.30pm this Friday.

There'll be a glass of wine and some wonderful home-made sausage rolls for guests, plus a chance to pledge for Margaret’s upcoming book, Ireland’s Green Larder. This explores Irish history, from earliest times, through the prism of food and drink, as she draws on diaries, letters, legal texts, ballads, government records, folklore and more.

In the book, Portumna resident Margaret explores Irish people’s relationship with many different types of milk, meat, grains and vegetables through the centuries. She examines how these were cooked and how methods changed over time, with many recipes included. And she explores how some foods were so important that they gained mythical status in a chapter on rituals around Irish food and drink. Ireland’s Green Larder being published by English company, Unbound, a community publishing model that allows individuals and communities to champion ideas and voices that might otherwise be overlooked.
