Delight on all sides as Cúirt takes over town

Arts Week with Judy Murphy
The distinctive ‘pencils’, which are synonymous with Galway’s annual festival of literature, Cúirt, have been installed around Galway and as the festival heads towards the weekend, ticket sales are on the up.
That’s according to Cúirt director Sasha de Buyl, who is thrilled to welcome authors and readers back for live, in-person events.
Cúirt has been running since Monday and highlights of the weekend include a reading this Saturday night from poets Raymond Antrobus and Roger Robinson. It’s at 8.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre. For those not familiar with their work, Sasha is urging people to discover “two of the most exciting and dynamic poetry performers on the British scene”.
Her claim has merit. Roger Robinson was the first Black British poet to win the T.S. Eliot prize, which he did in 2019 for his collection, A Portable Paradise. His previous collection, The Butterfly Hotel, was published in 2013. A lecturer and poet, he divides his time between Trinidad and London.
Also in 2019, Raymond Antrobus became the first poet to win the £30,000 Rathbone Folio Prize. He received it for his 2018 collection, The Perseverance, which also won a host of other awards, as did his 2021 collection, All The Names Given.
Antrobus, who was born in London to an English mother and Jamaican father, is renowned for his skills as a performer as well as a writer and he’s the lead vocalist and lyricist for King Midas Sound.
