Deans finish good year with homecoming gig

Spending your twenties playing rock and roll music, and touring around Europe while living in France sounds like a daydream, yet that’s just what The Deans are doing.
The three-piece, who mix pop and folk with rock, return to their native Galway this Sunday, December 21, when they will play the City’s Róisín Dubh. Speaking from the breakfast table in a hotel in Burgundy, bass player Ronan Lally describes the previous night’s show in a nearby bar.
“It was great,” he says. “Every time we play there, there are always more [people]. A very responsive crowd. It was a late afternoon gig, around five o’clock. A great way to finish the year.”
The Deans, who perform their own, original material, first took wings in in Athenry 2006 with the current line-up being Gavin Dean on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Gari Keon on drums and vocals and Ronan on bass. How much of this year have they spent in France?
“Six months, I think,” Ronan says. “The same with the year before, as well. It’s a lot easier to get work done here, and all to be under the one roof.”
While touring through France sounds like a wonderful life, Ronan reveals that The Deans’ reasons for relocating were brought about by necessity, not choice.
“It is that thing of keeping the show on the road,” he says. “We’d have a couple of gigs each week. In between, we’ve been recording throughout the year and doing a bit of mixing. Our new EP should be out by spring time. It’s a lot easier to be more organised here, among ourselves."
