Edel Coffey, whose just-published debut novel, Breaking Point, is making waves in the world of books will be in conversation with journalist and broadcaster Miriam O’ Callaghan at this year’s Cúirt Festival of Literature. The event will take place on Friday, April 8, in the Town Hall Theatre at 1pm.

Author and journalist Edel was interviewed in last week’s Tribune about her novel, published by Sphere and set in New York.

It centres on Susannah who has two beautiful daughters, a high-flying medical career, a successful husband and an apparently enviable life. All until one morning when a disruption to her strict routine leads to a fatal mistake.

This debut novel is striking a chord as it explores the pressures put on working mothers today.

Edel who is originally from Dublin and who now lives in Galway with her husband and children, has worked as a presenter and reporter with RTÉ radio, as editor of the Irish Independent Weekend Magazine and books editor of the Irish Independent.

She met her husband, David, at Cúirt some years ago, so this is a homecoming of sorts for her.

This year’s Cúirt Festival will take place from April 4-10 and the full programme will be announced later this month.

Cúirt is introducing a trial sliding scale ticket price for in-person events this year. There are four tiers – €5, €10, €15 and €20 – and people can select the price point that best reflects their means.

Because Cúirt relies heavily on box office income to support artists and deliver the festival, it’s asking people to reflect on what they can afford and consider how much they would traditionally pay for an arts event.
