Branar Broadway bound with ‘The Way Back Home’

Galway’s Branar Téatar do Pháistí with Denmark’s Teatre Refleksion will bring their much-loved adaption of Oliver Jeffers’ children’s book The Way Back Home to Broadway’s New Victory Theatre in New York from March 10-26. It will then tour six American venues, between May 4 and June 11, with 76 performances of the show in total.
The Way Back Home, produced in association with the 2014 Baboró International Children’s Arts Festival, premiered at that year’s Dublin Theatre Festival and then had a sellout run at Baboró. It toured Ireland in 2015 when it also sold out.
The Way Back Home has been seen by more than 15,000 people in Ireland, England, Denmark, Norway, Austria, France, Poland, Sweden and Japan. It will have its US premiere in Broadway’s New Victory Theatre, New York’s leading family theatre.
It’s the story of a boy who discovers a single-propeller airplane in his closet and does what any young adventurer would do – he flies into outer space! There is adventure and danger as he embarks on a quest to help a new friend he finds in his extra-terrestrial travels.
The author of The Way Back Home, Oliver Jeffers, in an interview with The New York Times, praised the stage show’s “inner beauty”, while Branar’s Artistic Director Marc Mac Lochlainn is unsurprisingly proud of what Branar and Teatre Refleksion have achieved.
“We breathed life into the wonderful characters that were so expertly created by Oliver Jeffers. It was privilege and we’re delighted that so many children around the world have now seen the fruits of our adventure.”
It all began in Galway and for Marc, “it’s great to be able to present work to children in Galway in the knowledge that it’s of world-class standard.”
