Painter and photographer Harriet Leander is currently showing her latest work in the city’s Daróg Wine Bar.

It’s on display at the Dominck Street premises Daróg until Saturday, October 25, and there will be a special ‘meet the artist’ night on Monday, September 22.

Harriet, who was born in Helsinki, Finland, studied art in Stockholm, Sweden, before moving to Switzerland, where she lived and worked in Basel.

She has been based in Galway since 1991, and was a pioneer in the dining scene here, through her acclaimed restaurant, Nimmo’s, which she opened in the early 1990s, having cooked there when it was the Blue Raincoat, owned by Séamus Sheridan who later went on to establish Sheridan’s Cheesemongers.

Since quitting the restaurant world, Harriet has focused on her art, working across oil painting, mixed media, photography and print.

Her art is deeply rooted in her surroundings, shaped by the shifting light on the Galway landscape and the rhythms of life and nature. Her most recent series, Visions of Colour, explores form and atmosphere through vibrant use of colour and texture.

Harriet has exhibited widely in Scandinavia, Switzerland, and Ireland, with shows at Oslo’s Rory Mitchell Gallery (Oslo), Galway’s Town Hall Theatre and Galway Museum, and Finland’s Galleria Dix in Helsinki.

Her works are held in public and private collections worldwide, including the First Typhoon Gallery in Xiamen, China, and in collections in Paris, Basel, Oslo, Helsinki, and across Ireland, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Scandinavia.

As part of the exhibition Vision of Colour, Harriet will host Le Chéile: An Evening of Creative Conversation on Monday 22 September 22, from  7–9pm at Daróg. In conversation with the wine bar’s owner Edel Lukács, she will share insights into her creative process and the ideas behind her work.

The evening will include a tasting of two wines selected to complement the conversation.

Tickets are €20 per person, which will include the artist talk, two glasses of wine, a pop-up art shop, and 10% off artwork purchases made on the night. Booking is essential. Tickets: www.darogwinebar.com.
