Senior football quarter-finals down for decision

THE most complicated and protracted structure in years has left some teams without a meaningful game in 12 weeks while others are facing their third tie in a month as the Salthill Hotel senior football championship reaches the quarter-final stage with four games down for decision this weekend.
With Pearse Stadium unavailable due to pitch resurfacing, three of the four games will take place at Tuam Stadium while the action opens with a clash between Bearna and Caherlistrane at Corofin on Saturday afternoon.
Tuam hosts a double-bill on Saturday evening, where city side St Michael’s could cause an upset against Annaghdown before Salthill-Knocknacarra take on Milltown in what, on paper, looks to be the toughest tie to call. Milltown will start as favourites, even though Salthill won the title in 2012 and reached the county final last year.
There is just one game down for decision on Sunday afternoon. There is an early throw-in for the clash between county champions Corofin and Mountbellew-Moylough, due to the televised All-Ireland hurling final.
Corofin are seeking their sixth county title in eight years and have already beaten Val Daly’s Mountbellew side in the first round. The champions were odds-on to retain their title before the championship even began in early June and there has been little to suggest in the interim that they are about to lose their status as the top dogs in Galway club football.
