Semi-final heartbreak for First Year NUIG ladies

The NUI Galway Freshers ladies Gaelic football team enjoyed a successful All-Ireland 7s campaign recently at UCD GAA grounds, reaching the semi-finals of the annual competition.

The side progressed from the group stages with impressive wins over Ulster University Jordanstown (UUJ), University Limerick (UL), IT Sligo, and Waterford IT, scoring an impressive 13-20 in those four games, and conceding just 0-9 in the process.

They opened with a 6-4 to no-score win over UUJ, and followed that with a 2-5 to 0-4 win over UL, that seven-point win being the lowest of their winning margins in the group stages. They made it three wins from three with a 3-5 to 0-3 win over Sligo IT; and completed a clean sweep of group wins with a 2-6 to 0-2 win over WIT.

They locked horns again with UUj in the quarter-finals, and while this time it was a somewhet closer affair, NUIG still ran out 15 point winners on a 4-4 to 0-1 scoreline.

That set-up a semi-final meeting with University Limerick, in what was a repeat of last year’s final pairing, which UL won in extra-time; and while NUIG came out on top in the group stage meeting between the sides, the Munster university repeated last year’s win on a 2-3 to 0-3 scoreline, and they went on to retain their title.
