Mulryan pulls off big plunge

ONE of Galway’s must successful racing owners showed he still hasn’t lost the touch when it comes to pulling off on old-style gamble.

Liam Mulryan’s Zoffanien was the subject of an early-morning plunge in the Oyster Tavern Handicap Hurdle in Killarney last Thursday.

Available at 14/1, the five-year-old was smashed into just 2/1 ahead of betting on-course where Zoffanien was eventually sent off the 5/2 market leader.

Twice a winner as a juvenile hurdler last season but largely out of form since, Mulryan’s charge gave his supporters an anxious moment when tight for room and losing his position four out.

But the top weight was soon back on an even keel, making smooth headway under trainer/jockey Denis Hogan to dispute the lead at the last before going clear by three and three-quarter lengths.

"The ride wasn't by design as I lost my position, but it worked out well. He is a bit lairy, but it is a big drop in grade for him. He had been running terribly all winter and we gave him a freshen-up recently. Zoffanien was a good juvenile, but they get killed by the handicapper and was a victim of his own success. He paid the penalty for the last year and a half.
