GALWAY fell short in the All-Ireland hurling final with a 1-29 to 1-18 defeat to Limerick on Sunday afternoon in Croke Park.

Limerick proved to be a class above Galway at Croke Park, with the Tribesmen unable to match their opponents' relentless intensity or find the fluency that had characterised much of their season.

Micheál Donoghue's side were bidding to win their first All-Ireland title since 2017, but it was the Shannonsiders who reclaimed the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time since 2023. Limerick consistently found scores with greater ease and, after taking control, cruised to a convincing victory.

While the defeat will be a bitter disappointment for Galway, Donoghue's side can still reflect on a season of significant progress. They regained the Leinster title and reached their first All-Ireland senior hurling final since 2018, laying strong foundations to build on in the years ahead.

Limerick took a 0-13 to 0-8 lead into the break and looked to be taking control of the All-Ireland hurling final. Seven different players got on the scoresheet for the men in green, while Galway managed just 0-2 from play during the opening half. It was a repeat of the 2018 final where Limerick narrowly edgedd past Galway 3-16 to 2-18. Galway had goalkeeper Darach Fahy to thank for some crucial first half saves.

There was little between the sides in the opening quarter, with Limerick holding a narrow 0-4 to 0-3 advantage after 15 minutes.Jason Rabbitte made an impressive start, winning three frees after being fouled close to goal, and Aaron Niland converted each of the resulting placed balls. Limerick, meanwhile, relied on a Diarmaid Byrnes 65 and a long-range free, along with points from Aaron Gillane, to maintain a slender one-point lead.

Two more Byrnes frees and Aidan O'Connor's opening score stretched John Kiely's side into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead. Niland responded with his first point from play before adding a 65 to cut the deficit back to the minimum, but Cathal O'Neill quickly restored Limerick's two-point cushion.

Galway threatened again when Tiernan Killeen burst through the Limerick defence. Barry Nash appeared to have intercepted his pass to Rabbitte, but referee Colm Lyons awarded Galway a free for a late challenge, allowing Niland to continue his accuracy from placed balls having just missed one free.

Limerick finished the half strongly, with Aaron Gillane, Shane English, Peter Casey, Cian Lynch and Aidan O'Connor all raising white flags. Galway could only reply through Niland and Rabbitte, leaving the Tribesmen five points adrift at half-time.

Aaron Niland reduced the deficit with his sixth placed ball early in the second half, but Limerick quickly took complete control. John Kiely's side outscored Galway by 1-6 to 0-2 in a devastating eight-minute spell between the 37th and 45th minutes to open up a commanding 1-19 to 0-11 lead. Cathal O'Neill's goal on 43 minutes firmly put the Munster champions in the driving seat.

Niland, Tom Monaghan and Cathal Mannion responded with points to briefly raise Galway's hopes of a comeback, but Limerick immediately answered through Cathal O'Neill and Peter Casey. The Tribesmen's task became even tougher when Ronan Glennon was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Casey, reducing Galway to 14 men.

Limerick continued to dominate over the closing 18 minutes, outscoring Galway by 0-10 to 1-4 to seal an emphatic 11-point victory. Cathal O'Neill, Peter Casey, Aidan O'Connor, Kyle Hayes, Aaron Gillane, Diarmaid Byrnes, Cian Lynch and David Reidy all added late scores for the winners.

Galway's only replies came from Darragh Neary, Colm Molloy and Conor Cooney, who converted a late penalty after Joshua Ryan was fouled in the square by William O'Donoghue, but it proved little more than a consolation as Limerick powered to All-Ireland glory.
