NUIG EXPERT SAYS ABORTION LEGISLATION SHOULD FOCUS ON CLINICAL JUDGEMENT

A legal expert from NUI Galway says the over-riding theme of abortion legislation should be respect for the clinical judgement of our doctors.

Ciara Staunton gave a presentation to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children, which is today focusing on the legal aspects of Government proposals.

She says doctors need to be trusted on the issue of abortion in the same way as they are with other life and death decisions everyday.

She also said that fears of the floodgates being opened to widespread terminations were "completely unfounded".

Speaking before the committee today, Ms Staunton said the clinical judgement of doctors must be respected and trusted when it comes to abortions.
