The West’s leading youth ballet company, Youth Ballet West, will present Once Upon a Time and Nutcracker Suite this Saturday and Sunday in the Town Hall Theatre. The show promises a wonderful mixture of fairy-tale favourites and seasonal ballet delights.
Once Upon a Time, will take the audience on a journey through many favourite classic tales, including Snow White, Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks. Inspired by the vibrant visual images in these fairytales and set to a magical score by John Lanchberry, the ballet is choreographed by Judith Sibley, Artistic Director of Youth Ballet West. This work premièred at Baboró 2009 to great acclaim and the ballet has since toured to arts festivals in Dingle and Dublin.
Sibley’s staging of Nutcracker Suite, the classic Christmas family favourite, played to sold-out audiences in Galway when it was first performed in 2008. The young dancers of Youth Ballet West shine as they bring to life The Land of Snow followed by excellent interpretations of the well-known Divertissements and Waltz of the Flowers. The roles of The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince will be performed by Judith Sibley and Leighton Morrison. With specially commissioned costumes hand-made in Moldova and a stunning new set, this is a wonderful opportunity to see some of Ireland’s most talented young ballet dancers and is a perfect family show.
It’s on Saturday, December 18 at 8pm and on Sunday, December 19 at 3pm and 8pm. Tickets: €16 / €12 from the Town Hall Theatre, Galway, 091 569777, www.tht.ie
