Galway County Councillors will receive an update on the local authority's plans for Galway Airport at a meeting in July.

Councillor Peter Feeney (FG) requested that an update to be given at the July meeting of the Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District.

The airport on a 118-acre site in Carnmore is jointly owned by Galway County Council and Galway City Council.

Both local authorities invited expressions of interest regarding the strategic site through a private consultancy.

A report was due in May.

The recently formed Galway Aviation and Innovation Advocacy Group is lobbying to retain the runway.

The Councils jointly purchased the property from Galway Chamber of Commerce in November 2013 for just €1.5 million.

That was two years after commercial operations ceased in 2011 following the country’s economic crash.

When Galway City and County Councils invited expressions of interest from organisations to purchase the ‘development land’ at Carnmore last year, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien confirmed that his department gave “no consideration” to purchasing the former airport site.

Director of Services for Athenry/Oranmore agreed to update councillors on the proposals in July.
