The authorities acted quickly once they were notified of the incident

A local councillor has said it was a 'small minority' behind an 'unfortunate' incident that took place at a Galway park over the weekend.

Doughiska residents woke up on Bank Holiday Monday to find that the planting around the newly upgraded skatepark had been destroyed.

Galway City Council and the local Tidy Towns Committee acted quickly though, organising a clean up with a replanting to happen in due course.

Councillor Alan Cheevers said: “Unfortunate incident on Sunday night, as planting around the skatepark at Doughiska has been uprooted.

“This is unfortunate and was carried out by a small minority who vandalised around a facility that has been a huge success for the area.

Councillor Cheevers added: “I have spoken to Mark Ryan of Galway City Council and also our Tidy Towns Committee who will do a clean up.”

Refurbishment works by Browne Brothers Site Services LTD were carried out on the skatepark last year to the tune of €400,000.

The state-of-the-art park includes a variety of features, catering to both beginners and more experienced skaters and bikers.

City East Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan Cheevers says it's one of several positive developments for the area in recent years.

It was even shortlisted for an Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Award in the Leisure or Tourism category this year.

The nomination recognised the transformation of the well‑used but aging facility into a modern, inclusive and technically advanced skatepark that now ranks among the best of its kind in Ireland.

Speaking about the nomination at the time, Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Mike Cubbard, said the project represents a milestone for the Doughiska community.

Councillor Cubbard said: “This upgrade shows what can be achieved when young people, local groups and the Council work together with a shared vision.

“The skatepark has gone from a much‑loved but declining facility to a vibrant destination where children, teenagers and families gather every day.

“Its design reflects what the community asked for - a safe, modern space that supports active lifestyles. This national recognition is richly deserved.”

Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Leonard Cleary, added: “This nomination highlights the value of investing in high‑quality public amenities, especially in communities where they have a real and immediate impact.

“The Doughiska Skatepark upgrade is the result of close collaboration between our staff, specialist contractors and the skate community.

“It has delivered a durable, safe and beautifully crafted space that will serve young people for decades. We are delighted to see the work recognised at a national level.”
