Two young city men, charged in relation to the burglaries of nine city homes – seven of which allegedly occurred over a four day period last week – were remanded in custody at Galway District Court yesterday.

Ryan Golbey (18), with an address at 78 Fana Burca, Knocknacarra, and Joseph Myers (22) of 84 Fana Burca, Knocknacarra, were arrested in Milltown on Sunday night, from where they were taken to Tuam Garda station and charged.

Both are co-accused of entering a home in An Cimin Mor, Cappagh Road, last Thursday, from where they stole items including a laptop, bottles of spirits, jewellery, and coins.

Myers faces one burglary charge on his own, in relation to a home in Tor Bui, Cappagh Road, on Saturday, from which he stole keys to a 2013 Nissan Qashqai and €100 in cash.

Myers is charged with using the same vehicle without the consent of the owner, and Golbey with allowing himself to be carried in it, when it was stopped by Gardaí at Carrownurlaur, Milltown, on Sunday.

Golbey faces a further eight charges of burglary, at other houses in the Knocknacarra area, stealing a range of items, including a car.

Sean Acton, solicitor for Golbey, made no application for bail. However, Myers did apply and was met with a lot of opposition from the State.

Hearing that the defendant had a history of not turning up to court for less serious charges, Judge Mary Fahy concluded he would be unlikely attend for these, and she formally refused bail.

Both men were then remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court, attached to Castlerea Prison, on Friday.
