TURF CUTTERS CASE ADJOURNED FOR SERVICE OF BOOKS OF EVIDENCE

Date Published: 06-Mar-2013
The case involving four Galway turfcutters has been adjourned for service of books of evidence next month.
The four had been issued with summones in relation to alleged turf cutting activity in areas designated as SACs and appeared before Judge Geoffrey Browne at Loughrea District Court today.
The summones relate to three separate incidents in May and August last year contrary to Section 35 and Section 67 of the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats ) regulations 2011.
The judge said that the case was far too serious to be dealt with in the District Court and refused jurisdiction.
The matter has been adjourned to the District Court to be heard on April 10th for service of the books of evidence.
Meanwhile, down the road from the courthouse, over 200 turf-cutters turned out to hold a silent protest.
