Mike Diskin returned as manager to the Town Hall theatre two years ago, and had been undergoing treatment for cancer.
The Salthill native became the first manager of the theatre and oversaw its official opening in 1995.
He was also the managing director of the Galway arts centre in the 90s and is accredited with helping to build the national and international reputation of the Cuirt festival.
