Motorists are set to be driven to distraction as traffic calming measures are introduced in Claregalway – already one of the worst bottlenecks in the country.

The plan has already met with resistance from local councillors and businesses who want to see a bypass of the village – not an additional go slow.

Workers already have to sit in tailbacks for up to 45 minutes to get through Claregalway every morning and evening as traffic grinds to a halt.

Local Cllr. James Charity was one to express serious reservations about any traffic calming measures through the village.

The independent councillors was informed by Galway County Council that there would be some resurfacing works carried out in Claregalway and around the local national school.

But he was shocked to discover that money would be spent on traffic calming along one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in the country.

“It is not possible to slow down the traffic any further,” Cllr. Charity remarked. “If motorists who travel through Claregalway on a daily basis hear this, they will consider it the biggest joke of all time.”
