Thieves target rugby club while players training

Sports clubs in Galway have been urged to be vigilant in the wake of an incident at a training session in Tuam earlier this week when five vehicles were broken into.
Around 24 members of Tuam Rugby Club were training on one of their pitches on the Dublin Road when two young men smashed the windows of four vans and a car and stole cash and mobile phones. It is understood that one wallet contained €400 while one of the iPhones stolen had a value of around €1,000 and contained a lot of the owner’s work information.
Sergeant Pat Hastings of Tuam Garda Station has warned clubs and those participating in training not to leave any valuables in their vehicles.
“We are coming into the time of year when many sporting organisations are training under floodlights and it is imperative that nothing of any value is left in cars to tempt the culprits,” he said.
There was a similar incident at Kilkerrin Football Pitch on Wednesday of last week in which two cars were broken into while training was in progress.
The Tuam training session was taking place in the ‘middle pitch’ a good distance away from where the vehicles were parked. Two men, believed to be aged between 18 and 24 in a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback broke into the vehicles and also sifted through clothes in the dressing room.
They fled hastily with the boot of the vehicle still up when players and coaches became aware of what was happening.
