Thieves take the turkey

Heartless thieves destroyed one family’s Christmas this week – by breaking in to steal their turkey.
It was one of a number of burglaries in the east of the county, which led Gardaí to warn householders to be on high alert following a series break-ins by so-called motorway gangs.
These gangs are mainly targeting cash and jewellery – and even the Gardaí themselves were shocked at this incident in the Tuam area in which the turkey was taken.
The gangs, mainly made up of four or five individuals, are using the motorways to access towns like Ballinasloe and Tuam.
At least three houses have been targeted in the Kilcloghans area of Tuam, which is adjacent to the motorway and Tuam bypass.
A senior Garda spokesman told The Connacht Tribune that householders living in the vicinity of the M6 or M17/M18 motorways to reassess the security in their homes in the wake of what has been happening in recent weeks and months.
In the early part of November there were at least 20 break-ins reported in the Mid to North Galway areas with cash and jewellery being the main targets for the thieves.
