Plans for two new airport terminals servicing the Clifden to Inish Bofin air service have been given the green light.

The County Council has approved plans submitted by the Department of the Gaeltacht for the buildings on the island and mainland.

The approval of both terminals will bring a new air service between Connemara and Inish Bofin a step closer to fruition.

The Inish Bofin terminal will be situated at the southern end of the existing airstrip at Middlequarter on the island, and will be 190 sqm in size.

The single storey building will include a main entrance lobby, passenger waiting area, office, kitchen, fire engine and fire fighting equipment.

The corresponding Clifden airport terminal will be built at Cloon, 2 kms east of the village of Cleggan.

It will also be 190 sqm and will have identical facilities as well as a manager's office and car parking.

The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has spent €10 million buying lands to develop the airstrips.
