Galway County Council staff are monitoring the situation regarding the disposal of the large sperm whale that lies dead on a beach at Omey Island in West Connemara.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the whale's teeth have been removed at night on the secluded Connemara beach.

Lights were seen in the area on Thursday night and again last night and industrial equipment was heard.

Council staff are considering the possibility of burying the dead whale on the beach next week.
