Galway’s 2020 Capital of Culture board have been advised to make ‘a pitch’ for funding to the billionaire Comer brothers if they find themselves coming up short on cash.

Cllr Michael Finnerty made his suggestion at this week’s meeting of Galway County Council during a Galway 2020 presentation at which councillors heard that there was €23 million in the kitty.

The elected members were informed that, of this amount, €15 million had come from private investors while €6 million was from Galway City Council while €2 million was allocated by Galway County Council.

The Galway 2020 representatives were asked by a couple of the councillors if they would be seeking further funding from Galway County Council.

Chief Executive Officer Patricia Philbin said that it would depend on the projects and what they required to either carry out or complete them.

That led Cllr Finnerty to suggest that, if they wanted more money, then they could make an application to the Comer brothers from Glenamaddy who topped the Galway entries on last week’s Sunday Times Rich List – or indeed any of the Galway representatives on the Top 300.

“Even the poorest one in Connacht had over two hundred million so ye would have a lot to choose from in that bunch. Loads of money for any 2020”, the Fine Gael councillor added.
