AFTER a very slow start the number of people voting has increased substantially across Galway city and county this evening.
The current trends show that in the region of 10 to 11 per cent have now voted with one polling station in Ballybane recording almost 12 per cent.
Voting will continue at 145 polling stations in Galway West, which includes the city, and 149 in Galway East until 10 o'clock tonight.
The surge in voting numbers this evening is in marked contrast to the slow turnout before lunch when one polling booth in East Galway had only 1.5 per cent of voters casting their votes. All the votes cast in Galway will be counted at two centres, Leisureland, for Galway West and New Inn Community Centre, for Galway East.
The opening of the boxes will get underway after 9 am tomorrow and all boxes are expeced to be open by 11.30.
Returning Officer Marian Chambers-Higgins and her staff expect that the counting of all the Galway votes will be completed by 1.30 or 2 pm when the results for the county's two constituencies will be announced.
