Status RED wind warning for Galway

Met Éireann has issued a Status RED wind warning for Galway and Clare during Storm Jorge on Saturday afternoon – gusts up to 145km/h are expected, as well as potential for structural damage and coastal flooding.
Westerly winds will reach mean speeds of 85 to 100km/h in places on Saturday afternoon between 1-4pm with gusts of 130 to 145km/h, with an elevated risk of coastal flooding.
According to Met Éireann, the issue of RED level severe weather warnings should be a comparatively rare event and implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions.
The Road Safety Authority has warmed that road users should not make any non-essential journeys in the affected areas during the storm window.
”Road users are also being warned to be on guard for dangers posed by hazards following the extreme weather event, for example downed pylons lines, trees, branches etc,” a spokesperson said.
