Sporting fixtures badly hit

JACK Frost played havoc with the local sporting fixtures programme over the weekend, but the Galway Hurling Board convention will go ahead as scheduled at the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry tomorrow evening (Wednesday).

A number of fixtures from the various codes – in particular, soccer and rugby – were wiped out last weekend due to the sub zero conditions, but Hurling Board Secretary John Fahey was confident the inclement weather would not impact on delegates’ travelling arrangements.

“No, it is not under threat,” said Fahey. “In fact, I am just driving through Athenry at the moment and the main roads seem to be fine.”

He admitted, though, that if the annual convention had been scheduled for one of the clubs on the periphery of the county, then calling it off may have been a consideration.

However, given that Athenry is so central, he believed it should suit most delegates. The Hurling Board was one of the few sporting organisations which managed to fulfil a fixture last weekend as Barna/Furbo junior ‘B’ hurlers took one step closer to adding the league to their championship crown when defeating Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2-14 to 0-7 in the semi-final at Ballinderreenon Saturday.
