Rural gangs strike again with spate of burglaries

Gardaí investigating a spate of burglaries in rural Galway late last week aren’t ruling out the possibility that the same gang was behind the whole lot.
Thousands of euros worth of jewellery was targeted by those break-ins which appeared to Gardaí to be very similar in nature.
A spokesperson for Tuam Gardaí told the Connacht Tribune that in many cases a gang might “circle and area with a compass” and concentrate on this location for a couple of days and nights.
The burglaries occurred near Tuam, in Dunmore and there was one in Caltra. In all cases, jewellery was targeted.
The Garda spokesman said: “Those responsible might stay in an area for a couple of days and wait until the house is empty. The majority of break-ins occur in the morning to mid-afternoons.
“Often they just come up to a door and knock and if there is a response, they make and excuse and go down the road and try the next house.
“Form our investigations so far, there is a certain similarity with these crimes which occurred within days of each other.”
The North Galway area has been particularly hit when it comes to burglaries in recent weeks with houses in Moylough broken into before Christmas while dwellings in the Caherlistrane and Belclare areas targeted more recently.
