Council officials are to prepare a report on the difficulties faced by the local authority in tackling the growing number of horses in public areas in the city.

It follows a motion raised by City Councillor Terry O'Flaherty calling for a review of existing legislation for the removal of horses from public greens, housing estates and residential areas.

Director of Services Kevin Swift told last night's meeting of the local authority that 100 horses had been impounded by the city council last year and 400 had been put down in the pound.

He said that although the problem was abating somewhat, he was not sure all powers available to the council were being explored.

He agreed to provide a report on any enforcement difficulties facing the council when the local authority meets next month.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Councillor O'Flaherty says legislation for microchipping is urgently required to make horse-owners more accountable.
