Prehistoric material uncovered during advance works on Moycullen bypass

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Prehistoric material has been discovered near Ballyquirke Lake as archaeologists undertake advance works on the Moycullen bypass route. Fieldwork commenced earlier this month after the contract was awarded to Irish Archaeological Consultancy Limited. The NRA funded project involves excavations, architectural and underwater surveys over an area of 34 hectares. The first stage of the investigations covers test trenches and the identification of newly discovered archaeological sites. Items uncovered in the low-lying soils of Ballyquirke lake basin include burnt mounds, charcoal burners, hearths and campfires. Once this stage is complete, the team will request permission from the National Monuments Service and the National Museum of Ireland to fully excavate and record the sites. This work is likely to commence in September.
