A post-mortem is to be carried out later this morning following the death of a local fisherman who was airlifted from Lough Corrib last evening.

The 53 year old Salthill native lost his fight for life overnight after he was rescued just north of Annaghdown.

He was one of two anglers rescued from the water by the Irish Coast Guard.

Both men were thrown into the water after a wave hit their boat about 2 kilometres north of Annaghdown between marker 56 and 57 on Lough Corrib.

It's understood the second man, a 47 year Oranmore native, is still being treated at UHG this morning.

The vessel the men were travelling in has since been taken in for a technical examination by Gardai.
