New lease of life for former bank as Ballinasloe gets hi-tech remote workspace

Planners have given the green light to an enterprise centre and digital hub in Ballinasloe – with the potential to accommodate more than 40 workers.
Galway County Council has granted planning permission to Ballinasloe Area Community Development (BACD) to develop the former bank – a protected structure – for which consent has already been granted by the property’s owners.
Previously the old National Bank which later became the Bank of Ireland, it was then leased out for commercial businesses and residential accommodation when the bank ceased operations there almost two decades ago.
Ballinasloe Area Community Development Chairman Seamus Duffy revealed that it would involve an investment of up to €700,000 to modernise the building and is seeking expressions of interest from local developers to carry out the works.
The plan is to change the use of the building on Society Street from retail on the ground floor and residential on the first floor into an employment hub.
This will involve some demolition works to the rear and inside of the building along with extensive refurbishment works both inside and outside. It is also planned to install solar panels on this protected structure.
