One of the county’s oldest residents died last week at the magnificent age of 105.  Jean Weir passed away at the weekend in the Hillside Nursing Home, Aughrim where she had been in care for almost twenty years.

Born in Taughmaconnell on November 5 1908, Jean celebrated her 105th birthday last year in the company of her two sons, 76-year-old Gerry, whose birthday fell on the same day and 82-year-old Des, as well as other relatives and friends.

She had been the recipient of five Presidential Medals and was one of the first residents of the newly-opened Aughrim Nursing Home in 1994, along with her late sister, Catherine Kelly.

One of a family of seven, she is predeceased by her daughter, Monica, and is survived by her sons, Des and Gerry; daughters-in-law Bridie and Dill, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
