Plug finally pulled on Tuam’s superloo – after twelve years of waste

An infamous superloo – installed in Tuam more than twelve years ago and only used around a half a dozen times ever since – is finally on its way after repeated calls for its removal.

The facility originally cost around €500,000 to install – but the public were not willing to spend a penny following a number of embarrassing incidents that occurred during its infancy.

Meetings of Tuam Municipal Council were told that as much as €800,000 had been spent on its upkeep and maintenance over the years – prompting calls for it to be dismantled and removed.

Earlier this week works commenced on its removal from the appropriately-named Shambles car park bringing the curtain down on a disastrous tenure during when users have been locked in, the doors swinging open and water jets coming on while in use.

The loo has also been subject to vandalism over the years – not to mention plenty of mirth at local authority meetings as Galway County Council have been repeated asked for its removal.

When it is eventually dismantled and taken away, it will be replaced by four car parking spaces which the Council estimate could yield around €20,000 in income each year.
