Plans to refurbish and extend Eyre Square Shopping Centre

Fresh plans to completely redevelop the Eyre Square entrance to the Eyre Square Shopping Centre – providing five new retail outlets and a restaurant – are set to be lodged in City Hall by receivers.

Michael McAteer and Paul McCann of Grant Thornton were appointed receivers to two companies owned by developer Gerry Barrett.

Within the next fortnight, they will be applying for permission to demolish the existing entrance at Eyre Square, and construct a new three-storey entrance building.

Shancar Developments and Two Towers Management – previously owned by Mr Barrett – have the management rights to the centre and its walkways.

The receivers want to build a 13,000 square foot building over three storeys, which will accommodate five retail units and a restaurant with a deck area at first floor level.

While he still owned parts of the centre, Mr Barrett was granted permission for a 20,000 square foot ‘glass cube’ at the entrance, in an attempt to attract a major international fashion retailer.

Swedish giant H&M had been in talks with the developer to take a lease to the cube, but the permission was subsequently overturned on appeal to An Bord Pleanála.
