Galway’s long wait for All-Ireland glory finally ended on September 3, 2017, as the Tribesmen produced a commanding display to defeat Waterford and capture the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time in 29 years.

Played in front of a capacity crowd at Croke Park, the final saw Micheál Donoghue’s side deliver a composed and clinical performance to secure a 0-26 to 2-17 victory over Waterford.

The victory marked Galway’s first All-Ireland senior hurling title, the jewel in the GAA crown, since their famous triumph in 1988, sparking emotional scenes among players and supporters alike.

On the day, Galway set the tone early with scores from Joe Canning, Conor Whelan and Johnny Glynn. Waterford, then managed by Derek McGrath, stayed within touching distance thanks largely to the accuracy of free-taker Pauric Mahony and a determined defensive effort.

However, Galway’s relentless work rate and attacking depth kept the pressure on. Canning, the team’s talisman, delivered a captain’s performance, finishing with nine points.

Waterford threatened late on when goals from Austin Gleeson and Shane Bennett briefly reignited hopes of a comeback, but Galway held firm. Key scores from David Burke, Cathal Mannion and Whelan helped steady the Tribesmen in the closing stages.

Joe Canning later lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup to deafening cheers, sealing a historic day for hurling in the west.

For Galway, it was the end of a generation-long wait - what will Championship 2026 hold?
