Oranmore café shows real spirit of Christmas

A fledgling Galway café is determined to show the true spirit of Christmas by throwing open its doors to one and all this Christmas Day, and inviting the homeless – or those just lonely and living alone – to join them.
Thomas & Co, located beside Tesco in the Oranmore Town Centre, will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Christmas Day, offering free tea, coffee, mince pies, and sandwiches – but, more importantly, ensuring company for people who may otherwise spend Christmas Day on their own.
Café owners, John Thomas and his wife, Nicola McGuire, have decided to open for the afternoon to give people somewhere to spend a few hours on what can otherwise be a very lonely day.
“We don’t have a busy day at home; we don’t have children so we don’t have a visit from Santa to our house,” explains Nicola.
“It will be John and myself, and a friend of ours, Edel Wade, who will be here on the day, and the response to the plan to open for a few hours has been overwhelming. We just wanted to give people who may be homeless, who may be alone, or just want somewhere to pop in to for a few hours somewhere to go.”
