Head-scratching results leaving GAA punters in financial strain!

Inside Track with John McIntyre
There’s not much logic to some early season results in inter-county hurling and football at the best of times, but 2022 is taking the biscuit altogether so far. Put it this way, anyone trying to pull off what seems a banker GAA accumulator is tearing their hair out in frustration.
Having been one of those poor souls the last two weekends, it’s tempting to put the handbrake on until we see more consistent lines of form established. Sure, how could you make money when Kerry footballers, at the prohibitive odds of 1/10, could only draw with Kildare in the opening round of the National League.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the previous evening at Dr Cullen Park Park, Carlow (1/7) somehow lost a ten-point lead against a London team which hadn’t played a competitive match in two years. Granted, Carlow were reduced to 14 players, but that comeback reduced many punters to tears.
Undaunted, we tried to recoup some losses when the hurling league started last weekend. We were taking no chances and ignored the handicaps. Instead, we opted for a straight win outcome in their respective matches for Kilkenny, Galway, Tipperary, Cork, Westmeath – so far, so good – and All-Ireland champions Limerick.
The first five all obliged with varying degrees of comfort, even if Kilkenny and Tipperary had some periods of anxiety in their wins over Antrim and Laois respectively. It just left Limerick to close the deal and a happy Monday morning visit to Boyle Sports. They were playing a Wexford team which had been beaten out the gate by Dublin in the Walsh Cup the previous weekend.
Even though the match was going ahead at Wexford Park – admittedly, a difficult venue for visiting teams to get a result – I gave Darragh’s Egan’s charges no chance of toppling Limerick, especially as the Shannonsiders travelled with a strong looking line-up. The Morrissey brothers were present, so were the likes of Hannon, Hegarty, Gillane and Byrnes.
