Personnel numbers at Renmore army barracks are to increase by 180 as part of the re-organisation of the Defence Forces

The reorganisation will see the retention of the First Brigade – an Chéad Chathlán Coisithe – at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa and an increase in army strength from 318 to 496.

The announcement by Defence Minister Alan Shatter quashes fears the barracks in Renmore had been earmarked for closure under the consolidation plans.

Galway West Fine Gael deputy Brian Walsh told Galway Bay fm News not only is the barracks to be retained but its strength is to be increased by over 50 percent which is a significant vote of confidence in the base and a considerable boost for the area
