NEW BRIDGE FOR LEENANE PROMISED BY OCTOBER

The village of Leenane in Connemara is to get a new permanent bridge by the Autumn. The National Roads Authority has confirmed it's building a permanent bridge to replace the century-old bridge destroyed by a flash flood and mini-landslide last July. The bridge, on the main N59 link road between Clifden and Westport, carries up to 4,000 vehicles a day. Locals and tourists have been using a temporary bridge ever since.NRA officials told a recent meeting of Galway TDs and councillors that the new permanent bridge will be built along the same route as the old bridge. Local county councillor Josie Conneely is confident Leenane will have its new bridge in time for the fishing season in October.
