Moves are underway to ban horses from Ballyloughane Beach in the East of the city.

The City Joint Policing Committee has recommended the city council consider introducing byelaws to prohibit horses or horse-drawn vehicles on the beach and other designated rivers and lakes.

City councillors have raised concern that horse-owners have been using Ballyloughane beach and the pier in Menlo to wash their horses.

The proposal will be brought before Galway City Council next year for consideration.

Cllr Declan McDonnell says the proposed byelaw would strengthen the Gardaí and warden's hand in dealing with the problem
