The number of homes in Galway with high cancer-causing radon gas levels is increasing.

The latest figures from the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland show that 200 homes were tested for radon in Galway between June and December last year.

Almost a quarter of these were found to be above the acceptable level of 200 units of radon per cubic metre.

Last October, the RPII reported that one home in Galway was found to have radon levels 18 times more than the acceptable level.

3 homes in Claregalway, 2 in Oughterard and 1 in Castlegar were found to have four times the acceptable level.

Senior Scientist with the RPII, David Fenton, says it's very important that homeowners in Galway buy a radon testing kit.
