79 staff are set to retire from University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park Hospital by the end of this month.

It's part of the Government's early retirement scheme which allows public servants to retire early on pensions calculated on their pre-paycut salaries.

City Councillor and Chairperson of the HSE West Regional Forum Padraig Conneely says half of the staff leaving Galway hospitals will be nurses.

The remainder will be from a cross section of the health sector and will include some consultants.

Councillor Conneely says the Minister must now consider filling those gaps and should treat Galway as a special case.
