Waterford United 2

MERVUE Utd’s failure to take their chances proved costly once again as they suffered their fourth Airtricity League defeat in a row following a 2-0 loss to Waterford Utd at the RSC on Friday night.

A late goal in either half for the home side ensured they claimed all three points as Johnny Glynn’s side missed some good opportunities to take something from this game.

The home side started brightly and had the first chance of the game on five minutes as Gary Dunphy found Paul Walsh on the right wing and he whipped in an excellent cross, but Seamus Long headed over from a good position.

On 10 minutes Dave O’Brien played a long ball in behind the Waterford defence which found Pat Hoban, but defender Kenny Browne got back to make a clumsy tackle on the edge of the box with Mervue claiming a foul but their protests were waved away by referee Sean Grant.

Dave Goldbey then showed good skill in the box but he couldn’t direct his shot on target after 22 minutes, while at the other end Gary Keane glanced a header just wide from inside the penalty area.

Waterford’s full back Michael Coady should have opened the scoring just after the half hour mark, after good work from Phelan and Walsh set him up but he fired over the crossbar from four yards.Mervue had another good chance seven minutes before break when Etanda Nkololo swung in the corner which found Noel Varley but he headed over the crossbar.

The home side took the lead right on the stroke of half time as Seamus Long swapped passes with Sean Maguire on the edge of the box before slipping the ball past Ger Hanley for a 1-0 interval advantage.
