Marking Good Friday with special performance of sacred music

Music for Galway and Galway 2020 will stream Passio (the St John Passion) by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, live from the City’s St Nicholas’s Collegiate Church next Friday, April 2, at 5pm. The concert, for Good Friday, will be screened live and will also be available to watch until 5pm on Easter Tuesday, April 6.
Written in 1982, the St John Passion is one of the late 20th Century’s best-known choral works.
It’s Pärt’s setting of the Latin text from the Gospel of John, written for solo baritone (Jesus), solo tenor (Pilate), solo vocal quartet (Evangelist), choir, violin, oboe, cello, bassoon and organ.
Pärt’s music is steeped in faith and devotion, and is renowned for its echoing beauty.
This 70-minute performance features many of Galway’s best-known musicians, alongside some of Ireland’s finest emerging singers. It’s part of Music for Galway’s Abendmusik or Evening Music series.
