Up to 15 people were arrested for public order offences in the city overnight.

The arrests were made on the first night of an unofficial rag week that's taking place in Galway.

Councillor Frank Fahy told a meeting of the city joint policing committee yesterday, that the event had been branded 'social week'.

Councillor Padraig Conneely added that the whole week would be fuelled by alcohol, and needed to be closely monitored by Gardaí.

NUI Galway and GMIT college management say they do not support any RAG week events.

Speaking on 'Galway Talks' Councillor Billy Cameron said it was a 'minority of students' bucking the trend by organising such events
