A controversial plan to close the westbound carriageway of the M6 between Athlone and Ballinasloe for 3 weeks starting on Monday has been shelved.

Businesses in Ballinasloe and Athlone were up in arms at Roscommon County Council's plan to close the motorway during the busiest trading period of the year.

The council intends carrying out drainage improvements works on that stretch of the M6.

Roscommon County Council has now backed down and agreed with the NRA to postpone the drainage improvement works until next Spring, blaming the recent poor weather conditions for their decision.
