INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO IRISH INDEPENDENT BREACHES OF CITY POLLING BOOTHS

An investigation has begun into how copies of the Irish Independent Newspaper carrying a front page call for a 'Yes' vote in the Lisbon Treaty Referendum were distributed inside polling stations in Galway city yesterday. Galway County Registrar Marian Chambers Higgins is furious that several bales of free copies of the newspaper were left for voters inside booths at the Claddagh, Dr Mannix Road, Seamas Quirke Road and Bushy Park. The paper carried a front page editorial comment yesterday under the headline 'Why we need to vote Yes'. It's illegal to have any literature inside a polling station which may influence a voters decision.
