INVESTIGATION INTO TAXI SIGNAL INTERFERENCE AT CITY PEDESTRIAN LIGHTS

Date Published: 18-Apr-2012
Galway City Council has launched an investigation into the reported use of taxi computer systems to change lights at pedestrian crossings.
It's after City Councillor and taxi-driver Frank Fahy advised officials that some taxis have technology which enables them to change lights at certain city crossings.
It's understood the onboard computer GPS system operates by radio signal as a communication tool with the taxi headquarters.
Gardai are not investigating the alleged interference and have stated that regulation of lights is handled at city council level.
Director of Services Ciaran Hayes says the reported interference has yet to be verified but initial findings suggest it may be possible at pedestrian lights also operated by means of radio signal.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Ciaran Hayes says the possible use of the radio link is now being examined
