Some of the highest levels of radon gas in the country have been detected in the Belclare area, west of Tuam.

If follows a series of tests carried out by the Radiological Institute of Ireland.

The colourless and odourless radioactive gas is the second biggest cause of lung cancer in Ireland, after smoking.

Over 1300 homeowners in Galway have had their properties examined for the gas since the beginning of October.

Tests carried out west of Tuam as far as Shrule, including parts of Kilconly and Belclare revealed some of the highest levels in the country.
