Grocers Association lodges objection to discount store in Knocknacarra
Galway Bay fm newsroom - RGDATA, the representative association for independent grocers in Ireland has launched an objection over plans for a discount store in Knocknacarra.
The group claims the proposed ALDI store would result in a significant breach of the convenience retail requirement for the city, and argues there is inadequate car parking facilities.
ALDI is seeking permission to build the 15 hundred square metre single-storey discount store at a site bounded by the western distributor road and a link road.
This is a scaled back version of the plans given the go ahead in 2009.
Now RGDATA, which represents convenience store and local shops has lodged an objection to city planners over the application.
It argues that since the adoption of the city development plan in early 2011, there has been a significant amount of permitted and proposed convenience retail developments.
RGDATA says that in these circumstances it would appear that the future retail needs of the western suburbs and the city are adequately catered for.
The grocers association also claims that 96 car parking spaces for the store is inadequate based on CDP requirements.
City planners have now requested further information from Aldi regarding the plans and a decision is expected in the coming months.
